Informatie
Why we’re hiring
Simply Green’s web platforms have grown fast - and a huge amount of that success is thanks to one developer who has carried our sites from zero to scale. We’re now adding a Web Developer (backend-focused) to increase capacity, deepen backend skills, and share responsibilities so the platform keeps pace with our growth. This role is about complementing and collaborating with what already works.
The role
You’ll work alongside our current developer to build, maintain and improve our ecommerce and content sites. Your core strength is backend engineering (APIs, integrations, database design and performance), with enough CSS/JS fluency to turn supplied designs and components into polished, responsive, accessible interfaces. You’ll also keep an eye on our AWS setup (light-touch: monitoring, routine maintenance, simple CI/CD).
Reporting line:
- Line manager: COO
- Close working relationship with the existing developer
Responsibilities
- Design and implement backend features, services, and integrations with clean, testable code.
- Turn provided designs into production-ready HTML/CSS/JS (responsive, accessible, performant).
- Profile and optimise database queries and application performance.
- Write practical documentation and contribute to coding standards/PR guidelines that fit a small team.
- Collaborate closely with our current developer; communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders.
Backend & integrations
- Build and maintain services, APIs and integrations that power catalogue, pricing, checkout, logistics and content.
- Improve reliability, performance and security; write tests and instrument code for observability.
- Plan and execute incremental refactors without disrupting the business.
Frontend implementation (CSS/JS)
- Translate provided layouts and components into production-ready UI.
- Ensure responsiveness, accessibility and load-time performance.
- Infrastructure (AWS, light-touch)
- Operate straightforward deployments, backups and environment management (EC2, RDS, S3, CloudFront/ALB, Route 53).
- Keep CI/CD healthy and predictable; document runbooks.
Collaboration & ways of working
- Pair with our current developer; share knowledge both ways and avoid single-person bottlenecks.
- Contribute to coding standards, PR guidelines and documentation that are practical for a small team.
- Work cross-functionally with Operations/Marketing/Product to scope and deliver business value.
New builds (not just maintenance)
- Greenfield projects including a white-label product-configurator site (from architecture and data model through to integrations and launch).
- Net-new backend services and internal tools that support catalogue, pricing, fulfilment, and customer experience.
Core platform enhancements
- Improve performance, reliability, and security of our ecommerce sites.
- Build and maintain APIs/integrations with third parties (ERP, payments, shipping, marketing).
Today’s stack (and tomorrow’s options)
- We run on WooCommerce today. You’ll help us keep it fast, stable, and well-structured.
- As we scale, we may evaluate more enterprise-grade approaches (e.g. headless/commerce frameworks or a platform migration). You’ll contribute to the technical discovery, migration plan, and incremental rollout if we choose that path - no “big bang” rewrites.
What we’re looking for (skills & experience)
(No strict years required—show us meaningful work.)
- Strong backend engineering in one or more of: PHP/Laravel, WordPress/WooCommerce, Node.js/TypeScript, or similar.
- Confident with relational databases (MariaDB/MySQL/PostgreSQL): schema design, query optimisation, migrations.
- Solid HTML/CSS/JavaScript for implementing designs and UI behaviour.
- Practical AWS experience operating small-to-medium web stacks (EC2/RDS/S3/CDN, basic networking).
- Git-based workflows, code reviews, and automated testing.
Bonus points for any of:
- Ecommerce experience (pricing rules, catalogues, carts/checkout, payment/shipping integrations).
- Integrations with ERPs/CRMs/fulfilment (we use NetSuite and other third-party services).
- Performance profiling, security hardening, and observability (logs/metrics/traces).
- Experience improving WordPress/WooCommerce performance at scale.
What we offer
- Competitive salary + up to 10% of salary as an annual bonus
- 8% holiday allowance, paid monthly.
- 20 days annual leave plus Dutch public holidays.
- Additional 1 day of annual leave per year of service, up to a maximum of 5 extra days.
- Travel allowance in line with the Dutch tax-free maximum (€0.23 per km).
- A chance to shape how our web platform scales, working closely with the people who built it.
- Autonomy, clear priorities, and a culture that values respectful collaboration.
You’ll thrive here if you
- Enjoy collaborating with the wider business team, and you improve things iteratively.
- Balance pragmatism with quality—shipping value while paying down tech debt safely.
- Communicate clearly with non-technical teammates and keep stakeholders in the loop.
How to apply
Use the link to send us your CV, GitHub/portfolio and a short note about a project where you made a meaningful improvement without a full rewrite. If you’ve worked in ecommerce, we’d love a quick example.
